Hand turned wooden flogger – Grey

Versatile, beautiful, sustainable

I’m proud of these little floggers. Turning the handles is easy – cutting materials for the falls, be they cord or PVC, is also easy. What’s less simple is making sure they are robust enough for use, so these have been tested by friends and customers before unleashing them on the public! Making sure the falls are securely attached into the handle can be tricky, so I use a mechanical fixing and a hefty dollop of strong glue.

The falls are nylon cord. I found yards and yards of the stuff, in three or four colours, in my local scrapstore. I’ve no idea what it was intended for – it is a lot like picture hanging cord, just more colourful – but now it’s clean and repurposed into this dinky bit of fun. I melt the ends to stop it fraying. The whole thing creates a nice whistling noise and a bit of a sting!

The wooden handle is turned by hand from eucalyptus wood, sanded silky smooth, then lightly oiled but not sealed. A local pub cut down their beautiful eucalyptus tree just as the “only socialising outdoor” rules kicked in during Covid – they built a covered seating area and the tree was in the way. It was such a shame to see something so venerable and unusual cut down, but I did manage to save some branches because it’s not often I get to turn something this exotic! It’s finished off with a matching glass “puddle” – these come from a local glass artist who lets me have the oddments left over, which she makes into “puddles”. So yet another bit of waste turned into something pretty!
